Consistency is the key to content

You created your website, and now you want to blog on it. Most experts will tell you this is a wise decision. Engaging content is a key reason why a site builds traffic. And traffic is important to developing a following, leads, and ultimately, customers. Content is king in the new paradigm of web-based marketing.

Now your question is how often should you post? That answer may vary, depending upon the type of site, the frequency of visitors, the necessity for fresh content, and the availability of a skilled writer to create text. Your type of business will also impact blogging frequency.

A plumber or house painter may not need as much content as a public relations firm. Ditto a manufacturer of automotive parts, who might post less frequently than a law firm. But in all cases, consistency is vital. Decide upon a rough schedule for how often posts will be created, and stick to it. Maybe you post twice a month; maybe twice a week; or perhaps daily or even more. Your particular business or industry will lead you towards a reasonable schedule. Search the web for your type of business, and check out your competitors’ blogs. That will likely give you a feel as to how often blogs are updated.

The biggest issue is when a new entrepreneur starts a blog, and then abruptly ends it, often because they get busy with customers. The worst thing you want a prospective client to see is a website where a blog has ended several weeks, several months, or years ago. The question that naturally enters the prospect’s mind is whether the business is still in existence. That is not the impression you wish your blog to make upon a new visitor!

Bottom line: consistency is the byword. For frequency, a quick 10 to 15 minute check of your competitors will give you good direction. Then, stick to your schedule. If you’re a bad writer, don’t have time, or don’t have the inclination to write, hire a freelancer. A content-rich site is a prospect magnet.
