Could you be a serial entrepreneur?

While many who take the plunge and create their own business are focused only on the task at hand, others seem to relish the creation process. This breed of entrepreneur enjoys the challenge of starting a business and nurturing it to profitability. The businesses is then sold, and the creator moves on to the next project. Hence the term “serial entrepreneur”, coined to describe this subset of business proprietors.

A recent report studied characteristics of serial entrepreneurs. The purpose of the study was to identify characteristics of the serial entrepreneur, positing that these folks needed to be identified, mentored, and funded, as the future of the US economy rests largely upon their shoulders. These characteristics are interesting, and we look at whether these values and skills sets are present in our own lives, as we move along our entrepreneurial path.

Three areas of motivation where serial entrepreneurs scored significantly higher than the US population as a whole were:

  • Utilitarian — this is the results-oriented desire for a return on time or money utilized.
  • Theoretical — this includes a person who places a high value on keeping his or her knowledge up to date and prizes continuous learning.

Individualism — this indicates a high drive to exert control in things around you, including a willingness to take risks and accept responsibility for the outcomes.

In addition, the study found that serial entrepreneurs master more professional skills than the average adult. These master creators of businesses not only value the obtaining of knowledge, they developed professional skills through the process of starting, building, and operating various businesses throughout their lives.
