Why resumes are overrated

If you are hiring an employee, one of the first things you will ask for is a resume. And while you shouldn’t ignore the resume altogether — it contains background information with respect to schools, prior employment and such — relying upon it to provide you a lot of useful information may be a mistake.

Anyone can create a good resume, especially when there are services that will take information and create a decently presentable piece. Moreover, the person at whose resume you are looking is not necessarily interested in your job. She may be interested in “a job”. In fact, you may be one of 200 or 300 places she has sent her resume.

But maybe more important than the resume is the cover letter. It’s much harder to create a standard cover letter to send to hundreds of employers. You would spot that in an instant anyway. The cover letter is much more likely prepared by the actual job applicant, allowing you the ability to see if she reads and writes proper English. Does the cover letter grab you? If it doesn’t, maybe the applicant isn’t so much interested in your job as any job.
