You discover an interesting phenomenon when you study the lives of successful entrepreneurs. While some of them may have postgraduate degrees, and impressive records of academic achievement, many do not. Quite often, you find that these individuals utilized non-traditional means of educating themselves.
This is not to denigrate the value of a college education, a master’s degree, PhD, JD or any other formal paths of matriculation. In fact, in today’s world, small entrepreneurs often utilize their post-secondary education as a springboard, and supplement it with anything from self-study, to a mentor-protégé relationship, to continuing education classes, to materials provided from nontraditional institutions.
While a college education can enrich your life, and make you a better human being on a number of different levels, you typically don’t find practical training on the skills of small or solo entrepreneurship within hallowed halls.
So will education make you successful? In life, the short answer is yes. Education is rarely harmful; having a well-rounded curiosity about history, the world about us, and art and music makes one a better person. But if we substitute the word “money” for “successful”, the answer becomes much less clear. A bachelors degree in business may not prepare you to launch an Internet-based firm that squeezes profits from your passion. You may have to expand your definition of the word “education”. So if by this you mean obtaining knowledge by any effective means, then the answer to, “will education make you money” is also yes!
